Beyond the Starlit Skies

SSAATTBB a cappella

A moving setting of a poem by civil war era Virginia native Aldine S. Kieffer, deftly capturing the spirituality and hope in the belief of a heavenly reunion with those that have passed away before us, "voices of loved ones" calling us to that "far-off home"; a great choice for select high school ensembles, collegiate and adult ensembles. Including a brief, opt. solo opportunity.

Veni Sancte Spiritus

SATB with Piano Accompaniment

Veni Sancte Spiritus was commissioned in the spring of 2014 for the National Philharmonic Chorale under the direction of Dr. Stan Engebretson. The piece received its premiere in Vienna (Austria) and two subsequent performances in Salzburg and Prague.
When seeking inspiration for this piece I desired to create a festival choral work that would be accessible for the church choir pews as well as the concert hall.  The text, "Veni SancteSpiritus" (Come Holy Spirit), is filled with the energy and mystery that surrounds the writings on the Holy Ghost. The varied descriptions of the Holy Ghost in scripture as "tongues of fire"  and "a sound like the blowing of a violent wind" (Acts 2) provide wonderful imagery depicted by the ethereal opening  whole-tone cluster and energetic first section of the work. A bell-like ostinato in the piano accompaniment strengthens the momentum of the section as well. The more mellow and colorful second section of the piece, "Emite Spiritus", invokes the mystery that lies in the supernatural form that is described of the Holy Ghost. In this section the opening whole-tone cluster is echoed in the piano but also melded with a chant structure to recall the deep musical tradition of the Christian Church. This connection is further called upon during the A Capella chorale toward the end of the section. The piece quickly returns with a recapitulation of the first section and a triumphant ending to the text "And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth".
